Long before luxury lodges and Olympic slopes, Deer Valley was known as Snow Park — a small, handmade ski hill born from local ingenuity. In the 1940s, Bob Burns and Otto Carpenter turned a north-facing hillside into Utah’s first lift-served ski area using pine poles, mine parts, and a repurposed truck engine. Their wives cooked hamburgers in a small hut while skiers swung from homemade chairs above.
The lifts ran only on weekends, drawing around a hundred locals at a time — and sometimes, a few thrill-seekers who couldn’t resist jumping off between towers (to mixed success).
That spirit of creativity and community paved the way for Deer Valley’s opening in 1981 — and standing on the same hillside today, it’s hard not to be amazed at how far this little mountain has come.
